Eric Monnin is the Vice-Président de l’Université de Franche-Comté and a delegate on the program, l’Olympisme – Génération 2024. He has a PhD in Sociology with a focus on sports and physical education.

Monnin will present on the rich history of the Olympic Games, the values that they impart, the growth and expansion of the games to include more and more sports, and the upcoming role of France in the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. He will discuss the event’s evolution over time to its current-day form as an important international showcase that symbolizes the strength and power of competing nations in peacetime.

This event will be completely in French and is suitable for high-intermediate students, advanced students and native speakers.

Presenter’s Bio

After an early career as an award-winning athlete in judo (French school champion) and musician (graduate of trumpet and musical training of the National Conservatory of Music of the Region of Besançon), Monnin performed with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Besançon until 1994.

His doctoral research focused on the Olympic Movement and Olympic education. This study led him to organize “Olympic Weeks” in schools and universities with the support of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He participated in the organization of the Olympic Youth Camp in Sydney, Australia and Athens, Greece during the Olympic Games. In October 2006, IOC President Jacques Rogge invited Monnin to Beijing, China, as an IOC expert, to participate in the “World Forum on Sport, Education and Culture.”

In 2010 he traveled again to Beijing to present during the World Union of Olympic Cities (UMVO). In 2017 and 2018, he was invited to South Korea by the French Embassy for the Francophonie celebrations to the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. Since 2018, he has been participating in the project “Generation 2004 in Greece on the road to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games” initiated by the French Embassy / French Institute of Greece in Athens. He is also a member of the scientific commission that aims to have “The Olympic Spirit” included in UNESCO’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

In December 2019, he founded the French Centre for University Olympic Studies and Research (CEROU) at the University of Franche-Comté, where he is the director. In 2012 in London, the IOC awarded him the Pierre de Coubertin Medal (he is the only Frenchman to hold this prestigious international distinction).

Monnin has published several books and has several medals: Knight of the National Order of Merit, Officer of the Order of Academic Palms, Gold Medal for Youth and Sports, Bronze Medal for Voluntary Military Services, IOC Pierre de Coubertin Medal.
